Dr. Ijaz
Ahmad Manager Technical PHDEB presented the salient features
of the workshop, role of PHDEB for citrus development
like access to new markets, organization of Citrus Task
Force, introduction of seedless Kinnow, installation of
tensiometers & drip irrigation to conserve water and
conducting awareness workshop/seminars.
Mr. Tariq Qamar, Auditor and Expert Food Division of BVQI
gave presentation on EUREPGAP. He discussed about Integrated
Crop Management, Pest Control, Quality Management, HACCP,
Worker Health, Environmental Pollution, Traceability of
Produce, Record Keeping, Varieties and Rootstocks, Site
History and Site Management, |

Soil
and Substrata Management, Fertilizer Use, Fertilizer Storage,
Organic Manure, Irrigation, Crop protection, Choice of Chemicals,
Records of Chemical Application, Pre-harvest Interval, Spray
equipments, Crop Protection, Residual Analysis MRL, Crop Storage
and Handling Hygiene, Post Harvest Treatments, Identification
of Waste and Pollutants, Risk Assessments, Training Needs and
Equipments, Welfare and Wildlife Conservation.
Mr. Riaz Mehmood, Entomologist from CABI Bio
Sciences Regional Centre Pakistan presented protocols of SPS
and Integrated Pest Management. He elaborated on the standards
for GAP, alternatives for pest control, fruit fly trapping,
SPS Agreement under WTO, Food Standards, Pests and Diseases.
He informed the participants that out of 1 million insects identified
so far, only 1% are quarantine pests. European Countries and
USA are importing predators and parasites from Pakistan. Certification
of fruit fly species presence and absence in different regions
is required. He also talked about fruit fly management thru
FFS (Farmers Field School) and its benefits to farmers. The
importance of Neem tree plantation was emphasized to be used
as repellant to pests.
Syed Arshad Hashmi, Chief Executive, Officer
Quest Consultants gave presentation on HACCP. He said that it
is food safety management. He discussed about quality foods
processed under hygienic conditions, general protocols for preventing
food contamination, traceability, identification marks for safe
foods, microbiological/ physical or chemical affects on food
quality and shelf life, use of waxes and wrappings on fresh
produce, food grade quality of wrapping and packing materials.
Dr. Ijaz Ahmad PHDEB presented the standards
for export of citrus fruits. He explained the importance of
standards to sustainable exports. The minimum requirement of
fresh fruit in clued that the fruit should be intact, sound,
clean, free from any visible foreign matter, free of damage,
free from abnormal moisture and free from foreign smell. This
is followed by Classification like Extra Class, Class1 and Class
2. He apprised the participants on minimum juice contents required
for different citrus types. The tolerance limits concerning
size of fruits, uniformity, external damage, packing and presentation
were explained to the participants. He informed the participants
that these standards would be enforced thru pre-shipment inspection.
These are voluntary but compliant exporters would be entitled
for 25% freight subsidy.
Participants actively participated in question
answers session which followed each presentation. At the end
participants were served lunch. The workshop ended with vote
of thanks. |
