Visit of Australian Delegation

“Our visit to Pakistan is to conduct workshop for mango sector improvement, to create linkages between key researchers and other stakeholders from Pakistan and Australia, to prioritize future mango research and development needs including capacity building and training needs and identify suitable partners for collaborative activities”
This was stated by Mr. Ray Collins, Group Leader of the delegation

Mr. Sadiq briefed the delegation on constraints being faced by the stakeholders like lack of policy framework, weak institutional linkages, lack of need based research, non existence of standardization & hygiene protocols, weak information dissemination mechanisms, poor logistics/distribution system, lack of infrastructure such as cool chain system, appropriate technology, know how and techniques. They were explained the initiatives being taken by PHDEB and elaborated the (14) fourteen projects undertaken by the Board under Trade Policy 2003-04 initiatives. They were told about the strengthening of PHDEB under ADB Agribusiness Development & Diversification Project and the establishment of Project Horticulture Unit within the Board.

They were also apprised about the upcoming National Trade Corridor (NTC) project and the participation of PHDEB in the establishment of Cold Storages, Pack Houses throughout the country and the deployment of Reefer Containers for transportation of perishable goods. Horticulture has been declared as a high priority sector by the government of Pakistan
Mr. Ray Collins, Group Leader of the delegation applauded the work done by PHDEB and said that the main objective of their visit is to ascertain the problems being face by the growers, processors and exporters of mango and citrus and visit the mango orchards to identify the causes for sudden death in the mango trees. He said that they will compile the findings after completion of their tour and send them to PHDEB and also emphasized the need for future contact and liaison.


The objective of the Australia-Pakistan Agriculture Sector Linkages Program (ASLP) is to strengthen agriculture sector interaction between Australia and Pakistan’s commercial, academic and research institutions through joint activities and institutional links. The program envisions an integrated approach centered on building and expanding links and explores commercial opportunities between key Australian agriculture institutions and individuals with their Pakistani counterparts.

Ajmal Media Consultant PHDEB also attended the meeting.
