Scope of Project
The major objective of the project is to irradiate horticulture products (fruits, vegetables, spices & herbs etc). Its major purpose is to achieve infestation (kill pathogens), extend shelf life of produce and meet quarantine (SPS) requirements of the importing countries. The facility can also be used for irradiation of pharmaceutical and other products.
It is a joint venture of Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company (PHDEC) and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

Management Setup
A private limited company with 3 directors from PAEC & 3 from PHDEC. Day to day affairs of the project are looked after by the Project Manager with technical support from PAEC.
Current Status
The plant started operations in June, 2008. A reasonable relevant R&D work has been initiated and contact with potential customers established. Export of mangoes to USA has not started because concerned USA officials did not travel due to existing situation in the country. However, mangoes are being irradiated for other export destinations (France, Norway, UK, Spain, Canada, UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia).
