Project Rationale

Currently there is no data base available for floriculture sector. However, as per estimates the area under.

Area under cut-flower production

Area Rosa Species

Budded Rose

Jasmine Tuberose Gladiolus Total
Punjab 4000 1300 1300 1200 900 8700
Sindh 2500 340 350 675 - 3865
Balochistan 1100 130 - 462 403 2095
NWFP 1000 150 330 450 410 2340
Total 8600 1920 1980 2787 1713 17000

The above data clearly shows that only few cut-flowers e.g. Rose, Tuberose, Jasmine and Gladiolus are grown in Pakistan. Other quality flowers like Chrysanthemum, Gerbera, and Carnation, Fresia, Statice are being experimented and major potion of their local demand is met through imports. Moreover, there is tremendous demand for various cut flowers in the international, and it is growing the benefit of which can be achieved. Thus there is huge potential for development of floriculture products and product diversification to fetch domestic and global markets..

Proposed Location

In Punjab, Pattoki is the most developed area in respect of flower cultivation; therefore the project is proposed to be established there. However, based on climatic conditions, Islamabad, Hyderabad, Quetta, Swat and AJK are other potential areas

Demand Supply Gap

In Pakistan, majority of cut-flowers grown at commercial scale are roses, gladiolus, tuberose, jasmine, marigold which have not export quality. The selected products in project are grown on limited scale and majority of the requirement is being met through imports. The proposed project has ability to meet the demand of domestic market and will also focus for export. Presently, there is no organized set-up for promotion of floriculture sector in Pakistan. The project will provide all sort of facilities like production, processing & packaging, storage and marketing at domestic and export level.
